It is a known fact that smoking is extremely injurious to health, and can cause life-threatening complications from respiratory issues to cardiovascular diseases. However, a lesser-known consequence of smoking in women is sagging breast

A study conducted by the University of Kentucky interviewed 132 women who were opting for breast lift surgery. In a major portion of the surveyed women, smoking was the cause behind their sagging breasts.

How Does Smoking Affect Firmness of Breasts

Smoking Harms Breasts

Speaking to the team of OnlyMyHealth, Dr Nanda Rajaneesh, Visiting Consultant, Breast Onco Surgery and Bariatric Surgery, Sakra World Hospital, Bengaluru, shared, “Smoking affects the level of estrogen in the female body. Since estrogen is required to maintain the density and size of breasts, smoking can severely impact the aesthetics of breasts. Smoking also increases the risk of breast infections, and causes narrowing of blood vessels which can cause or increase breast pain.”

Another way in which smoking affects the firmness of breasts is by enabling the breakdown of collagen. Cigarette smoke introduces harmful chemicals into the body, including nicotine and carbon monoxide, which accelerate collagen breakdown, the protein responsible for maintaining the skin's elasticity and firmness.

Additionally, smoking has a detrimental effect on blood vessels, reducing blood flow to various body parts, including the breasts. Inadequate blood circulation can lead to decreased oxygen and nutrient supply to the breast tissues, contributing to premature ageing and sagging.

How to Quit Smoking?

Smoking Harms Breasts

While the damage caused by smoking to breast health is concerning, Dr Rajaneesh offered a ray of hope, “The changes in breast due to smoking, start reversing after six months of being smoke-free. Quitting smoking can remarkably change the size of the breast and breast pain.”

For those who find it hard to quit smoking, Dr Rajaneesh listed a set of steps to boost breast health:

  • Exercise regularly
  • Consume a balanced diet
  • Practice proper skincare
  • Reduce the total number of cigarettes per day, and increase the time interval between two cigarettes
  • Include plenty of anti-oxidants like vitamins D and E in your diet
  • Avoid alcohol, refined sugars, milk and milk products

Reversing the Effect of Cigarette Smoke on Breasts

The link between smoking and breast sagging is a critical reminder of the far-reaching consequences of tobacco use. The detrimental effect of cigarette smoke on breast aesthetics can impact a woman's self-esteem and body confidence. By understanding the scientific basis of this connection and raising awareness about the effects of smoking on breast health, women can be empowered to make informed choices and prioritise their well-being.
