Menopause affects women in the prime of their life and at the height of their careers. This significant phase in a woman's life, which mostly occurs in her 40s or 50s, brings about various physical, emotional, and psychological changes. Unfortunately, it is often shrouded in silence, so awareness and understanding of its effects on a woman’s well-being are low. With around 40 different symptoms associated with menopause, the experience can feel different for every woman.

We spoke to our experts, who explained the impact of menopause on women and the need to break the silence associated with it.

Dr Duru Shah, Gynaecologist, Director, Gynaecworld-Center for Women's Health and Assisted Reproduction said, Some women may feel that menopause is just a phase in their life, which they can get through with no support. The symptoms of menopause can be difficult and, if unmanaged, can lead to negative consequences on their health in the long term. Early advice from your doctor can help reduce the potential impact on your health, relationships, and work.”

According to the Journal of Mid-Life Health, emotional difficulties made up 90.7% of the menopause symptoms in women, along with headaches (72.9%), tiredness (65.4%), and dysuria (58.9%).

Dr Shah added, “One of my patients whom I treated and educated for her low sexual desire, dry vagina, sleepless nights, terrible hot flashes, and loss of confidence, was able to regain her normal self after months and years of suffering. Some women are happy that they have reached menopause early because they have suffered during their periods. But early menopause requires more awareness and better management to prevent early ageing.”
