Facial fillers have become increasingly popular as a non-surgical option to enhance one's appearance, fix facial asymmetry, and combat signs of ageing. However, being well-informed is essential to ensure a safe and satisfying experience before opting for this cosmetic procedure.

Important Considerations Before Choosing Facial Filler

Facial fillers are hailed as a popular tool in the beauty routine of many celebrities and public figures. Nevertheless, as per a study by the U.S. Food and Drug Administration, it is crucial to understand the limits and probable risks involved with using dermal fillers, which can cause temporary side effects, permanent side effects, or both.

In a conversation with the team of OnlyMyHealth, Dr Nivedita Dadu, Skin Specialist, Founder and Chairman, Dadu Medical Centre, listed the following considerations before opting for facial fillers:

Choose a Credible Skincare Provider

Facial Fillers

While getting facial fillers, your experience will largely depend on the skills of the medical professional who will handhold you throughout the process. Look for a licensed and experienced practitioner, preferably a certified dermatologist or plastic surgeon, specialising in cosmetic injectables. Read reviews, check before-and-after photos, and reach out to past clients to know their quality of experience with the professional you might choose.

Understand the Different Types of Fillers

There are various facial fillers, each designed for specific purposes and areas of the face. Some common fillers include hyaluronic acid-based fillers (the most commonly used facial fillers), calcium hydroxylapatite fillers, and poly-L-lactic acid fillers. These fillers are hydrophilic, which attracts water and fills up the area where the filler is used, giving it a hydrated and voluminous look.  Research the options available and discuss which filler best suits your desired outcomes with your provider.

Set Realistic Expectations

While facial fillers can add volume, smooth wrinkles, and enhance facial contours, they may not completely change your appearance. Communicate openly with your provider about your goals so you can set realistic expectations. Additionally, getting facial fillers can be a slippery slope if your desire to get fillers is rooted in deep-seated insecurities or body dysmorphia. If that is your case, consulting a mental health expert before opting for cosmetic procedures can benefit you.

Consider the Potential Risks and Side Effects

Like any medical procedure, facial fillers carry some risks. Bruising, swelling, redness, and tenderness at the injection site are common but occur shortly after the injection and may resolve in a few days to weeks. More severe complications, such as infection or vascular occlusion, are rare but possible. Discuss the risks and side effects with your provider beforehand to manage your expectations and prepare for adversity.

Learn About the Procedure and Aftercare

The injection process is generally quick and not unbearable painful, but discomfort may be experienced afterwards. Your provider may use a topical numbing cream or cold compress to ease the pain. After the treatment, follow your provider's instructions carefully to minimise swelling and promote optimal healing. Your provider may prescribe anti-inflammatory gel in the case of infection or bruising. Avoid alcohol, smoking, or taking antioxidant supplements like green tea or multivitamin at least 48 hours before and after the procedure, as they boost blood flow and might cause excessive bleeding.

Take Note of Allergies, Lifestyle and Medical Conditions

Provide accurate medical history and details about your daily routine, as they can considerably affect facial fillers. Some fillers may not be suitable for individuals with specific allergies, lifestyle choices, autoimmune diseases, or prescribed medications. For example, lip fillers pose a higher probability of infections in people with diabetes or people on anticoagulants.

Discuss the Cost and Maintenance

Facial fillers are not permanent, and their longevity varies depending on the type of filler used. Be sure to discuss the cost of the procedure and the expected duration of the results. Additionally, ask about any follow-up treatments or maintenance required to maintain the desired effect.

To Choose or Not to Choose Facial Fillers

Getting facial fillers can be a transformative experience, enhancing your natural beauty and boosting your self-confidence. However, the decision to get facial fillers should not be taken lightly. Compensating on health for the sake of beauty could have harmful repercussions. That is why you should be educated and well-informed before getting fillers injected in your face to ensure the best results.
