Starting a family or embracing parenthood is a beautiful journey. When a couple decides to embark on this journey, there are multiple factors they ought to consider. Achieving pregnancy is the first step. Increasing your chances of getting pregnant involves a number of factors, including your general health, your lifestyle decisions, and the timing of your menstrual cycle.

Dr Hira Mardi, Consultant, Obstetrician and Gynaecologist, Manipal Hospital, Varthur and Whitefield, Bengaluru, listed tips to increase the chances of pregancy.

Tips To Increase Chances Of Pregnancy

Monitoring menstrual cycle

Dr Mardi said, “Gain insight into your monthly cycle by tracking the duration and timing of your periods. This aids in identifying the fertile window, typically occurring around ovulation, about 14 days before your next period commences. The chances of conceiving are higher during the fertile window.”

According to the British Medical Journal (BMJ), One in six couples experience an unwanted pregnancy delay. Most couples that present with a fertility issue do not have absolute infertility (i.e., no possibility of conception), but rather relative subfertility, which is characterised by a decreased chance of pregnancy due to several factors in either one or both partners.

Engaging in regular sexual intercourse

Strive to engage in intimate activities consistently every 2-3 days a week throughout the menstrual cycle, especially during the fertile window. This raises the likelihood that sperm will be present during ovulation.

Maintaining a healthy weight

Dr Mardi highlighted, “Hormonal imbalances due to being underweight or overweight can disrupt ovulation and hormonal equilibrium. Pursue a healthy weight range by adopting a balanced diet and engaging in regular physical activity.”

Nourishing diet

Ensure that your diet encompasses a diverse selection of fruits, vegetables, whole grains, lean proteins, and healthy fats. A well-rounded diet furnishes the necessary nutrients for reproductive health.

Moderating alcohol and caffeine consumption

Consuming excessive alcohol and caffeine can impair fertility. Stop the intake of alcoholic beverages and limit the intake of caffeinated drinks, such as coffee and tea.

Quit smoking

Smoking detrimentally affects fertility in both men and women. Putting an end to smoking can increase your chances of conception and improve overall reproductive health.

Alleviating stress

Dr Mardi noted, “High levels of stress may interfere with ovulation and fertility. Practice stress-relieving techniques, such as meditation, yoga, deep breathing exercises, or engaging in enjoyable activities.”

Taking prenatal vitamins

Start taking prenatal vitamins containing folic acid before attempting to conceive. Folic acid helps in the successful implantation and growth of the embryo. It is also crucial for the development of the baby's neural tube development and can help prevent certain birth defects.

Limit exposure to environmental toxins

The presence of various chemicals and toxins in specific pesticides, cleaning products, and work environments can potentially impact fertility. To mitigate the risk, it is advisable to minimise exposure to these substances whenever feasible.

Consider seeking guidance from a healthcare professional

If you have been unsuccessfully trying to conceive for an extended period, typically one year for women under 35 or six months for women over 35. A healthcare professional will assess your circumstances, provide expert advice, and conduct necessary tests to identify any underlying factors.

Bottomline

Dr Mardi concluded, “It's important to bear in mind that each person's fertility journey is unique, and patience is the key. Maintaining a healthy lifestyle while trying to conceive is also paramount.”
