Tooth pain can be excruciating, and when it strikes at night, it can disrupt your sleep and leave you restless. Understanding the reasons behind tooth pain at night and exploring effective home remedies by the expert can provide much-needed relief until you can see a dentist.

What Are the Reasons for Tooth Pain at Night?

There are several reasons why tooth pain may occur specifically during the night:

Bruxism

Grinding or clenching your teeth during sleep can lead to tooth sensitivity and pain. The pressure exerted on the teeth in this process can cause discomfort, especially when lying down.

Dental Infections

Nighttime-Toothache

Tooth decay or gum infections can progress and cause severe pain, often worsening at night due to increased blood flow and pressure in the head when lying down.

Tooth Sensitivity

Some individuals may experience heightened tooth sensitivity, which can be triggered by cold or hot temperatures, air exposure, or certain foods. The discomfort may intensify during the night when the mouth is dry and less protected.

Sinusitis

Inflammation of the sinuses can cause referred pain to the teeth, leading to nighttime toothaches.

Home Remedies for Tooth Pain at Night

While it is important to consult a dentist for a proper diagnosis and treatment, these home remedies may provide temporary relief from tooth pain at night:

Saline Rinse

Saline-Rinse

Dr Kishkindha (BDS), who formerly worked at Christian Medical College and Hospital, Ludhiana, Punjab, suggested that for individuals unable to seek immediate dental treatment for toothaches, utilising a warm saline rinse is advised.

According to her, a recommended method involves preparing a saline rinse by dissolving small amounts of salt in warm water. Afterwards, take a sip of the warm solution and hold it on the side of the mouth where the pain is experienced. Allow the saline solution to remain in the mouth for approximately one minute before spitting it out. This technique, known as the 'squish and spit' method, involves keeping the saline rinse in the mouth for a brief period as advised by Dr Kishkindha.

Cold Compress

Another thing you can do is apply a cold compress, which can provide temporary relief. Dr Kishkindha emphasised the importance of avoiding hot fermentation or using hot compresses externally on the mouth. The application of heat can potentially lead to swelling in the affected tooth. Instead, if you choose to use a compress, it is recommended to opt for a cold compress rather than a hot one, as stated by Dr Kishkindha.

Clove and Guava Leaves

Clove

According to Dr Kishkindha, placing a clove bud or guava leaves under the affected area can help alleviate toothaches. Clove possesses mild local anaesthetic properties and exhibits antibacterial effects. Simply place a small clove bud or chew on a tender guava leaf. The juice released from the leaves will penetrate the area of the painful tooth, providing relief from the discomfort.

Sleeping Position

To alleviate tooth pain, the patient needs to avoid sleeping in a position that exacerbates the discomfort. "This means refraining from sleeping on the same side as the affected tooth. For instance, if the toothache is experienced on the right side of the mouth, it is advisable to avoid sleeping on the right side," said Dr Kishkindha.

Failing to follow this precaution and sleeping on the same side as the toothache can increase pressure on the affected tooth, resulting in heightened pain.

Avoid Triggering Foods and Drinks

Steer clear of hot, cold, or sugary foods and drinks that can worsen tooth sensitivity and pain. Stick to a soft, bland diet until you can seek professional dental care.

Conclusion

Nighttime tooth pain can be distressing, but with these home remedies, you can find temporary relief until you can visit a dentist for a proper diagnosis and treatment. Remember, these remedies are not substitutes for professional dental care, so it is crucial to seek a dentist's guidance to address the underlying cause of your tooth pain. In the meantime, try these natural remedies to alleviate the discomfort and enjoy a restful night's sleep.
