Brushing and flossing are the cornerstone of any oral care routine, effectively combating issues like plaque, cavities, and gum disease. However, for some individuals, even consistent dental hygiene practices may not be enough to tackle the persistent problem of bad breath, also known as halitosis. Bad breath can be socially embarrassing and often indicates an underlying oral or systemic health issue. We spoke to Dr Nihal Yadav, BDS, Amayra Dental Clinic, Kaushik Enclave, Burari, Delhi and Former Resident, Deen Dayal Hospital, Hari Nagar, Delhi, to learn the causes of bad breath and explore alternative strategies to combat it when regular toothbrushing and flossing prove ineffective.

Causes of Bad Breath

"Bad breath is a common condition that can affect anyone at some point in their lives. It is characterised by an unpleasant odour emanating from the mouth, which can be a result of various factors," said Dr Yadav. "In most cases, bad breath originates from the oral cavity itself, primarily due to the buildup of bacteria on the tongue, gums, and between teeth. The breakdown of food particles by these bacteria releases foul-smelling sulfur compounds, leading to a bad odour. Additionally, poor dental hygiene, dry mouth, smoking, and high-odour foods can exacerbate the problem," he explained.

However, it is essential to recognise that bad breath can sometimes be a symptom of an underlying medical condition. "Conditions, such as chronic sinus infections, respiratory tract infections, gastrointestinal disorders, and liver or kidney problems can also contribute to persistent halitosis," said Dr Yadav. Identifying the root cause of bad breath is crucial in determining the appropriate course of action for effective treatment.

What To Do When Toothbrushing And Flossing Do Not Work For Bad Breath

Tongue Scraper

"If you have ruled out any underlying medical issues, it might be worth investing in a tongue scraper. Regularly cleaning your tongue can help remove the bacteria and debris responsible for causing bad breath. Gently scrape your tongue from back to front to ensure thorough cleaning," suggested Dr Yadav.

Mouthwash

"Incorporating an antimicrobial mouthwash into your oral care routine can be beneficial. Look for mouthwashes that contain ingredients like chlorine dioxide or essential oils, as these can help reduce the bacterial load in your mouth and temporarily improve bad breath," said the expert.

Stay Hydrated

"Dehydration can lead to dry mouth, which exacerbates bad breath. Drinking plenty of water throughout the day can help keep your mouth moist and prevent the buildup of odour-causing bacteria," suggested Dr Yadav.

Visit Your Dentist

"If bad breath persists despite your best efforts, it's essential to visit your dentist for a thorough examination. They can identify any dental issues, such as gum disease or tooth decay, that may be contributing to the problem. Professional cleanings can also help remove stubborn plaque and tartar," said Dr Yadav.

Quit Smoking

"Smoking not only causes its distinctive foul smell but also contributes to dry mouth and gum disease, leading to bad breath. Quitting smoking not only benefits your breath but also has numerous positive effects on your overall health, such as mouth and lung cancer," said Dr Yadav.

Watch Your Diet

"Certain foods, such as garlic, onions, and strong spices can leave lingering odours in the mouth. Try to minimise their consumption, especially before social interactions," said Dr Yadav.

Conclusion

Maintaining good oral hygiene practices, including regular toothbrushing and flossing, is essential for preventing bad breath. However, if these efforts do not resolve the issue, it is crucial to explore alternative strategies.
