Alcohol addiction, also known as alcoholism, is a chronic and progressive disease that affects millions of people worldwide. It is characterised by a compulsive need to consume alcohol, despite the negative consequences it may have on a person's health, relationships, and overall well-being. Dr Harsh Kapoor, Chairman (Pan Metro), Institute of Gastroenterology, Hepatology, gastrointestinal surgery and liver transplant, explained alcohol addiction, its signs, causes, and preventive measures.

According to the World Health Organization (WHO), there is no safe level of alcohol use that has no negative effects on health. At least seven different malignancies, including the most prevalent ones like colon and female breast cancer, are caused by alcohol.

Signs of Alcohol Addiction

Dr Kapoor listed the signs of alcohol addiction as follows:

  • Increased tolerance: People who are addicted to alcohol eventually build up a tolerance, needing more alcohol to have the desired effect.
  • Withdrawal symptoms: When alcohol consumption is abruptly reduced or stopped, withdrawal symptoms, such as tremors, nausea, anxiety, and irritability may manifest.
  • Neglecting responsibilities: An individual struggling with alcohol addiction often neglects their obligations, including work, school, and personal relationships.
  • Failed attempts to quit: Persistent efforts to cut back or quit drinking, followed by relapses, are indicative of alcohol addiction.
  • Continued use despite negative consequences: Despite experiencing adverse consequences like relationship problems, health issues, or legal troubles, a person with alcohol addiction continues to drink.

Causes of Alcohol Addiction

Dr Kapoor said that alcohol addiction can be caused due to various ways, which includes the following:

  1. Genetic predisposition: Family history and genetic factors play a significant role in the development of alcohol addiction. Certain genetic variations can increase vulnerability to addictive behaviours.
  2. Environmental influences: Growing up in an environment where alcohol abuse is prevalent or witnessing family members struggle with alcohol addiction can contribute to an individual's susceptibility.
  3. Psychological factors: Underlying mental health conditions, such as anxiety, depression, or trauma, can increase the risk of alcohol addiction as individuals may turn to alcohol as a coping mechanism.
  4. Social pressure: Peer pressure, societal norms, and cultural factors can influence alcohol consumption patterns, potentially leading to addiction.

How To Preventive Alcohol Addiction

  1. Education and awareness: Promoting education about the risks and consequences of alcohol addiction can help individuals make informed decisions and resist peer pressure.
  2. Establishing healthy coping mechanisms: Encouraging the development of alternative coping strategies, such as exercise, mindfulness, or engaging in hobbies, helps individuals manage stress without turning to alcohol.
  3. Building a strong support system: Cultivating supportive relationships and networks can provide individuals with a sense of belonging, reducing the likelihood of relying on alcohol for social interaction.
  4. Responsible drinking: Encouraging responsible drinking habits, such as moderate alcohol consumption and avoiding binge drinking, can help prevent the escalation of alcohol use into addiction.
  5. Seeking professional help: If alcohol addiction is suspected, seeking professional help from healthcare providers, counsellors, or support groups is essential. Treatment options such as therapy, medication, and support programs can aid in recovery.
