Non-Stop Burping: When Does It Become Concerning?

Onlymyhealth Tamil

There are a lot of reflexes in our body, one of them can lead to burping. When air accumulates in the stomach, it increases gastric volume, following which a reflex involving the relaxation of the lower esophageal sphincter and upward movement of the air through the oesophagus is initiated. This can cause an audible belch, also known as burping. While harmless, excessive or chronic burping can indicate something serious. We spoke to two doctors to understand the same.

When Does Burping Become Concerning?

Burping is a common occurrence, a result of eating or drinking. According to Dr Ankur Bambhania, MD Internal Medicine, DrNB (DM) Critical Care Medicine, Consultant - Internal and Critical Care Medicine, HCG Hospitals, Bhavnagar, it is a normal body function that is rarely a reason for concern. However, a few symptoms indicate further evaluation or medical attention, such as the severity and frequency of burping, heartburn, stomach pain, bloating, or changes in appetite and weight. That said, the doctor warns against taking the symptoms lightly as it might result from gastrointestinal illnesses such as gastritis, peptic ulcers, and acid reflux.

Research suggests belching is a physiologic event which normally happens up to 30 times a day. Excessive burping is when it is repetitive and interferes with day-to-day activity and affects the quality of life of patients.

Causes Of Excessive Burping

Dr Harpalsinh Dabhi, MD Respiratory Medicine, FCCS, Head & Consultant - Pulmonology and critical care medicine, HCG Hospitals, Bhavnagar said, “We consider various potential causes while treating a patient for chronic burping and belching. One of the most common causes is excessive air swallowing due to habits such as eating too quickly, consuming carbonated drinks or even chewing gums.” According to him, another frequent cause might be Gastroesophageal Reflux Disease (GERD), wherein the stomach acid flows back into the oesophagus leading to burping and belching.

In some instances, foods and beverages like fatty or spicy foods, alcohol, and caffeine might trigger excessive burping. Dr Bambhania attributes chronic burping to medical conditions like gallbladder disease, intestinal obstruction or pancreatitis. Other psychological factors include anxiety or stress.

“Conducting a thorough evaluation and considering these factors in identifying the underlying causes and suggesting suitable treatment options is essential,” the doctor said.

Understanding The Link Between Helicobacter Pylori And Burping

Helicobacter pylori (H. pylori) is a type of bacteria that causes infections in the stomach lining and can lead to multiple gastrointestinal problems.

“Excessive burping or belching is one of the symptoms commonly linked with this illness,” said Dr Bambhania, adding, “It usually occurs due to the bacteria that causes inflammation in the stomach, disrupting the normal digestion process and leading to higher gas production.” According to him, when a patient suffers from chronic burping, it is critical to examine the possibility of an underlying H. pylori infection and undertake appropriate diagnostic and therapeutic steps to address the disease and relieve symptoms.

Lifestyle Changes To Adopt

To treat excessive burping, it is suggested to make certain lifestyle adjustments. Here are some doctor-recommended steps to take:

  • Assess and adjust eating patterns
  • Consume smaller, more frequent meals, and chew the food slowly and thoroughly to reduce air intake
  • Avoid carbonated beverages, fatty or fried meals, and spicy dishes
  • Practise mindful eating, including not conversing and not eating too quickly
  • Participate in regular physical activity
  • Maintain a healthy weight
  • Indulge in moderate activity such as walking or cycling
  • Include stress-reduction practices such as deep breathing exercises, yoga, or meditation

Bottomline

Burping is alright as long as it is not chronic or persistent. If you have excessive burping, visit a healthcare professional. Get yourself examined to rule out severe gastrointestinal conditions like GERD. Make healthy lifestyle choices and avoid foods that trigger burping or any other digestive problems.
